TAMPA - NAT-ASP HEAD TO HEAD

Corvette Z06 vs Audi R8 V10: Two Naturally-Aspirated Drivers Cars in Our Tampa Fleet

A flat-plane V8 from Bowling Green and a V10 from Neckarsulm. Both naturally aspirated, both in our Tampa fleet, both priced below the imported European supercar shelf.

May 29, 2026 9 MIN Tampa Bay

Two naturally aspirated cars sit in our Tampa fleet at the price point where most renters genuinely have to choose. The 2024 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is the new American answer with a flat-plane 5.5 liter V8 borrowed from racing. The 2023 Audi R8 V10 Performance is the last of the V10 R8s, a car Audi has already discontinued in this configuration. Both are mid-engine, both make their power without turbos or hybrids, and both deliver something the current generation of forced-induction supercars cannot.

The short answer

Renting one of these for a Tampa weekend where the engine sound matters more than the badge? The Z06 is louder, sharper at the top end, and unmistakably American. It costs less per day, and the flat-plane crank gives it a sound profile that nothing in the European mid-engine class makes.

Booking for a milestone weekend where the badge matters as much as the drive? The R8 V10 is the answer. It is the last naturally aspirated V10 supercar in regular production, a fact most guests will not learn until after the rental is over. The R8 was discontinued in this exact spec, and our Tampa unit is a 2023.

POWERTRAIN

Flat-plane V8 vs Lamborghini-derived V10

The Z06 runs the LT6, a 5.5 liter flat-plane crank V8 hand-assembled at Bowling Green. 670 horsepower at 8,400 rpm, 460 lb-ft of torque, mounted behind the driver and driving the rear wheels through an 8-speed dual-clutch. The flat-plane crank is the detail that matters. Most V8s use a cross-plane crankshaft, which produces the burble Americans associate with the muscle car era. A flat-plane V8 sounds like a Ferrari 458 or a McLaren 720S. The Z06 is the first American production V8 that sounds like that.

The R8 V10 Performance shares its 5.2 liter V10 with the Lamborghini Huracan. Naturally aspirated, dry sump, 8,700 rpm redline. 602 horsepower, 413 lb-ft, mounted behind the driver, driving all four wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch. The all-wheel drive is the difference that matters in Tampa, where Florida summer rain can change a drive home from Sarasota in an unpleasant direction.

The Z06 is the American supercar people stopped expecting Chevrolet to build. The R8 V10 is the German supercar Audi has already decided to stop building.

How each one drives in Tampa Bay

The Z06 is brutal in a way the standard C8 is not. The seating position is the same, the cabin is similar, but the moment you press the accelerator past half throttle the LT6 changes the entire experience. The flat-plane V8 wails through the redline in a way that draws every head on Bayshore Boulevard. The chassis is firmer than the base Stingray. The Z07 Performance Package option adds carbon-ceramic brakes and a more aggressive aero kit. Our Tampa unit is configured with the Z51 setup, which keeps the car livable while delivering the headline performance numbers.

The R8 V10 Performance feels more refined around town. The cabin is quieter at idle. The all-wheel drive eliminates the wheel-spin moments that the Z06 creates at every Tampa traffic light. The seating position is more conventionally supercar, with the driver further forward in the chassis. On Howard Frankland at 70 mph the R8 is the calmer car. On a clear Bayshore stretch at 35 mph with the windows down, the V10 sound from behind your shoulder is one of the great remaining naturally aspirated supercar experiences.

Tampa scenarios where each one wins

BACHELOR OR BACHELORETTE HEADLINER

Z06. Louder, more dramatic, the badge that more guests in their twenties and thirties immediately recognize. The C8 silhouette reads as supercar from every angle and the Z06 wing makes the trim level visible at distance.

ANNIVERSARY OR MILESTONE WEEKEND

R8 V10. The Audi badge carries connotations of restraint that the Corvette badge does not. The R8 is the more refined dinner-arrival car. The driver gets the V10 sound, the partner gets the calmer cabin.

FIRST-TIME EXOTIC RENTAL

R8 V10. All-wheel drive forgives the kind of throttle inputs first-time exotic renters tend to make at Tampa traffic lights. The Z06 will spin its tires if asked, which is a feature for some guests and a problem for others.

TAMPA TO SARASOTA OR ST PETERSBURG DAY TRIP

Either, leaning R8. Both cars are mid-engine and not built for long highway stretches, but the R8 cabin is quieter at sustained 70 mph and the AWD reduces driver fatigue on the bridges.

VIDEO AND PHOTO SHOOT

Z06. The flat-plane V8 sound is the audio signature most editors want. The C8 silhouette is graphic enough to read from any angle.

DRIVER WHO CARES ABOUT THE ENGINE NOTE

Both. The Z06 sounds more aggressive at the top. The R8 sounds more melodic in the midrange. Most drivers prefer one or the other on first listen.

The brand-true details that show up in both

  • Naturally aspirated engines with redlines above 8,500 rpm. No turbos, no hybrids.
  • Mid-engine layouts with the driver positioned ahead of the powertrain.
  • Dual-clutch automatic gearboxes tuned for shift speed.
  • Available in single-unit form in our Tampa fleet, with concierge delivery across Tampa Bay.

Pricing and logistics

Both cars sit above the Tampa fleet floor of $399 per day, with rates quoted on dates. The R8 V10 Performance is harder to source in this exact spec going forward, so reservations confirmed further in advance get priority. The Z06 has more rental rotation. Drivers must be 25 or older with a valid license and our standard insurance review. Both cars deliver to Tampa International, downtown Tampa, Hyde Park, Channelside, South Tampa, Westshore, St Petersburg, Clearwater, Sarasota, and across the bay.

Pick by sound, not by spec sheet. Send the dates with the buttons below or call our Tampa concierge at (813) 365-7805 for a same-day quote on either car.
